The Turkish Super League and lower leagues have been hit by another operation by the Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office. The latest operation has led to the arrest of 29 people, expanding the investigation into match-fixing and sports betting.
Among those arrested are 14 active footballers, suspected of manipulating results by betting against their teams.
According to investigators, key evidence is unusual financial transactions recorded in the suspects’ personal accounts.
The investigation has also touched the top levels of Turkish football, with the arrest of Erden Timur, former vice-president of Galatasaray. The club has not officially reacted, while the case is considered a turning point in the investigation.
In total, the scandal involves around 1,500 people, with suspensions against nearly 1,000 players and 150 referees.
